What it is
The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link is a cross-border rail shuttle with exactly two stations: Woodlands North on the Singapore side, connected to the Thomson–East Coast Line, and Bukit Chagar on the Johor side. The line is roughly four kilometres and the ride itself is about five minutes.
The number that matters is not the ride time, though. It is the queue time it removes. Anyone who has sat on the causeway on a Friday evening or a public-holiday morning knows the crossing is not a 5-minute problem or a 40-minute problem — it is an unpredictable-hours problem, and unpredictability is what makes trips not happen.
The part people miss: one-stop immigration
Both countries’ immigration is co-located at the departure station. You clear once before boarding, and you walk straight out at the other end — there is no second queue waiting for you on arrival. That is a structural change to how a JB day trip works, not a marginal speed-up.
When, honestly
Service has been targeted for December 2026, with passenger operation reported for early 2027 and fares expected somewhere around S$5–S$7 one way. Structural works at Bukit Chagar were largely complete by April 2026 and systems testing was scheduled to begin around September 2026.
We are being deliberately careful with dates here. This project has shifted before, and a confident wrong date is worse than an honest range. If you are planning a trip that depends on the RTS running, check the official LTA and MRT Corp announcements close to the date rather than trusting any blog — including this one.
What it changes for where you stay
Today, choosing JB accommodation is largely a question of how you will handle the causeway: drive and accept the queue, or bus across and work around it. The RTS reframes it. Once trains run, the useful question becomes how far is it from Bukit Chagar — because that station is the new front door to Johor Bahru for anyone arriving from Singapore without a car.
That is worth thinking about now rather than in January. Weekend accommodation near the station is unlikely to get cheaper once 40,000-odd daily passengers start arriving.
Staying near Bukit Chagar
Bukit Chagar station sits beside the R&F Princess Cove development, in the Tanjung Puteri area, which is also where the existing causeway checkpoint is. Our three-bedroom apartment at R&F Phase 2 is in that development — about a kilometre from the current CIQ, with R&F Mall and a Jaya Grocer in the same complex.
We are not going to publish a walking time from the station platform to the lobby, because the station is not open and we have not walked it. When it opens we will walk it and put the real number here.
Should you still drive?
For a couple travelling light on a day trip, the RTS will be hard to beat. For a family with luggage, a grocery run, or several stops around Johor, a car still wins — the train drops you at one point and Johor Bahru is spread out.
