Why almost nobody else can do this
Two separate problems have to be solved at once, and most operators solve neither.
Most Singapore rental companies forbid the causeway crossing outright. Their insurance does not cover Malaysia, their cars are not VEP registered, and they do not want the recovery logistics if something goes wrong across the border. Taking a rental over without written consent typically breaches the agreement and can void the insurance — which turns any accident in Johor into entirely your problem.
And most JB hosts have no car to offer. They are letting an apartment; the transport is your business.
We are a Johor Bahru accommodation company (Kinetic Retreats Sdn. Bhd.) with a Singapore car rental company attached (Luminous Motors, UEN 201716987N, operating since 2017). The cars are set up for the crossing on purpose.
What the car side actually includes
- VEP registered with the RFID tag fitted — no permit counter on the day
- Commercial rental insurance that covers cross-border use, plus valid road tax
- 24/7 towing on both sides of the causeway and a replacement car if something goes wrong
- JB add-on: SGD 80 once, covering the whole rental — or SGD 35 if you only need Johor for a single day
| Car | Weekday / day | Weekend (3 days) | 7 days | Month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 116d | S$90 | S$290 | S$490 | S$1,960 |
| Honda Odyssey 7 seats | S$120 | S$360 | S$595 | S$2,380 |
| VW Golf 1.2 TSI CarPlay · reverse cam | S$80 | S$290 | S$490 | S$1,960 |

And the stay side
Three self check-in apartments, all in Johor Bahru, all with parking arranged:
- R&F Phase 2 — 3 bedrooms, sleeps 5, about a kilometre from CIQ
- Space Residency — 2 bed 2 bath, sleeps 4, five minutes from KSL City Mall
- SouthKey Mosaic — 2 bed 2 bath, beside Mid Valley Southkey
Two things to know before you drive
Fuel. Since 1 April 2026 a foreign-registered car may not be filled with subsidised RON95, and the driver can now be prosecuted, not just the station. Use RON97. The fuel rules, in full →
Insurance excess in Malaysia. The standard accident excess is SGD 8,000. Our optional CDW brings that down to $2,250 + $2,250, but for collisions in Singapore only — in Malaysia the full $8,000 applies whether or not you took it. We would rather you heard that here than after an accident. Insurance covers Peninsular Malaysia as far as KL.
